Local Highlights
Blacks Point
Renowned for its rich gold-mining heritage, featuring an engaging museum in a former church and a functional, water-powered quartz stamping battery. It serves as a scenic, historical hub for exploring nearby forest trails and gold-rush sites.
Waituta

Inangahua
Inangahua and Inangahua Junction and the surrounding river valley is a tranquil, historic West Coast gem known for premier fly-fishing, quiet bush scenery, and its role as a scenic gateway between the Buller Gorge and Reefton. It offers immense natural charm, including safe, clear rivers for swimming, trout angling, and easy access to historic gold mining, mining history, and local, rustic charm.
Ikamatua
A peaceful, rural West Coast village known for its authentic “Kiwi pub” culture, excellent year-round trout fishing, and central location to historic sites like Waiuta. It acts as a friendly, hub for exploring the region’s nature, featuring cozy accommodation, hearty dining, and stunning valley views surrounded by bush-clad hills.

Maruia 67km – The drive from Maruia to Reefton is one of the South Island’s most peaceful and underrated journeys, winding through dense native beech forest, quiet river valleys and the remote beauty of the Rahu Saddle. With very little traffic, ever-changing scenery and strong West Coast character, the route feels immersive and untouched. Along the way, rivers, birdsong and historic gold mining landscapes create a drive that is less about rushing to a destination and more about experiencing the wild, authentic atmosphere of inland New Zealand.
Westport is 78km – The drive from Reefton to Westport follows the powerful Buller River through rugged gorges, native forest and historic mining towns, offering some of the West Coast’s most dramatic inland scenery. The road winds alongside turquoise water, steep rock faces and dense bush before opening out toward the coast near Westport. Rich in gold mining history and surrounded by untamed landscapes, the journey captures the raw, adventurous spirit of the Buller region.
